Wine enthusiasts, wine sommeliers, party organizers and celebration planners, they all know the following 'wine for a party' tricks, and now you’ll know them too!
What wine should I choose for a party?
Wine comes from all corners of the earth, it can cost from two bucks to a few hundred dollars, and then there’s the grapes and the styles. Choosing the right wine is quite a challenge, but an easy one if you know what you’re doing.
As a general rule, always offer at least two different wines, a red and a white, that way you cover the most common styles. A price range between $20 and $30 per bottle is a safe bet to get the most for your money.
For the white wine, choose something thirst-quenching and crisp, like an Italian white or a Sauvignon Blanc.
These are all excellent choices:
Pio Cesare Cortese Di Gavi, Italy
- Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand
- Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc Knights, Sonoma
- Zonin Soave Classico, Italy
Note: For a dinner party, get a buttery and oaky Chardonnay.
For reds, look for a fruit-forward wine with a medium body. Avoid astringent or heavy wines. Merlot and Pinot Noir are often fabulous choices.
Try one of these:
Cambria Pinot Noir Clone 4, Santa Maria, Ca
- Layer Cake Malbec Mendoza, Argentina
- Swanson Merlot, Napa Valley
- California Pinot Noir Nielson Santa Barbara, Ca
NOTE: For a dinner party, definitely go for a Cabernet Sauvignon.
How much wine should I buy for a party?
As a general rule, people at a party will drink one glass of wine per hour. Some people drink more, and some drink less, so this is a reasonable estimate.
A bottle of wine has 5 5oz pours, so you need one bottle per every five people per hour.
Twenty guests at a three-hour event will drink 60 glasses, or twelve bottles of wine. Multiply the number of guests for the number of hours and divide that by 5. (20 x 3) / 5.
Expert party organizers and celebration planners will inquire if the guests prefer red or white, and you can too. That way, everyone is happy.
